Premature babies are vulnerable with various illnesses that need special handling. One of the most vulnerable disease occurs in premature infants is Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP). The disease is also a cause of child blindness in developed countries and some developing countries.
ROP in premature infants may be accompanied by minimal visual impairment, or the growth of abnormal blood vessels in the retina, which in turn can lead to retina ablation.
ROP Risk
The younger and smaller babies alive, the risk of ROP baby is greater. Premature infants less than 32 weeks or weighing less than 1500 grams have increased risk of ROP.
Some of the triggers that cause the appearance of ROP is the provision of oxygen that is less precise (excessive).
